When you walk into your office do you feel like you are the boss? When I was first starting out in my practice I always wondered what is it feel like to be the boss?
Does that mean that I get to know all the answers right now? Does that mean that I now understand exactly how to make money and making money all the time?
It took me a while to figure out really how to get into the mindset of being a business owner and not just working in my practice but working on my practice. In today’s blog post we’re going to talk about different ways you can start to have that mindset shift of being a business owner.
Holy Crap I’m the boss!
Thinking about owning your practice and being the ONE that is solely responsible for everything going right can be ridiculously scary. The responsibility can sometimes be too much and cause us to not make steps moving forward. We all have those freak out moments and they will continue to occur in your course of owning your practice.
In order to overcome that kind of frozen freakout moment, I want you to think about all the ways that you are rocking it right now in your practice. This could be that you pay your bills on time. Or maybe you are just changing people’s lives left and right. Whatever it may be, make a list of all the ways your are amazing.
Making a list of all the ways you currently are rocking your practice helps you to see what you are doing well and that you have accomplished. You might be the world’s greatest clinician and I also want each of us to be the world’s greatest practice owner.
Owning the Hard Stuff
One of the greatest ways to shift towards the business owner mindset t own the hard stuff. What I mean by that is to take credit for doing the hard part of running a practice. All too often we get stuck in our heads of what is not going right or what is still not done yet. Taking a good look around and in inventory of what you are kicking butt in right now is important.
What hard stuff are you rocking right now? It might be as simple as paying your bills on time, to inputting everything into Quickbooks.Think about your day, what are you impressed that you know how to do beside the clinical side of your practice? That’s the hard stuff I want you to own!
Scheduling Boss time
One last way to shift your mindset of overwhelm of being the boss is to schedule boss time. Boss time is when you when do what you want outside of your practice. Taking time to do what brings happiness to your life. We can get over scheduled in the boss work leaving us unhappy and resentful of being the boss. Making time and scheduling it (key in my life) to pause work and look around at my life and what brings me happiness. This boss time allows me to come back to the office in a re-energized and happy mindset. What will you schedule time for this year?
